The latest survey on Government school teachers conducted by the Education Ministry has revealed that the number of female teachers of Government schools countrywide is three-fold of the number of male teachers.
Kurunegala district Senior Director of Education W.M. Balasooriya said the number of teachers in Government schools is 236,738. Of them, 56,817 are male teachers while about 179,921 are female teachers. The percentage of female teachers is around 76 percent when the number of teachers is taken into account.
Balasooriya told a meeting of school heads of the Kurunegala district on Friday that the survey had revealed that at present there are 10,126 schools which includes 396 national schools and 9,730 provincial schools.
About 1,473 of these schools have less than 50 students.
However, there are about 34 schools that have over 4,000 students.
He said that according to the Higher Education Ministry, three new international universities are now being built in Sri Lanka by India, USA and UK.
The Police Department is conducting raids on drug dealers and drug distributors who sell narcotic tablets to senior students. Around 517 such drug dealers were taken in for questioning last week countrywide. In addition, 107 urban schools used by drug dealers to sell narcotic tablets to students have also been identified by the police.
The Education Ministry will enrol new students to Grade one classes of Government schools for this year on February 22. About 350,000 students to Grade one classes of Government schools will be enrolled this year, Balasooriya added.
