Old boys of Royal College and S. Thomas’ College will play in a golf tournament ahead of the annual Royal-Thomian cricket encounter at the RCGC golf course on February 25.

They will play for the Fred de Saram trophy that was donated by the De Saram family in 1970 as well as to raise funds for charity.

The two schools have formed a union named Royal-Thomian Golfers Guild that will organize this annual tournament. Players should be in the age limit of above 21 and players over 60 years will also take part.

The oldest player to be seen in action this year will be veteran player Soli Captain who is 91 years old for the Old Thomians. His son is Rusi Captain who has represented Sri Lanka in golf who will play on the opposite side.

Over 120 golfers consisting of the Old Boys of the two schools will participate. They should be 21 years and above, holding a handicap from a recognized golf club. They will be divided into (Pairs) two players each team and will be pitted against two players from the opposition. The concept will be a four ball event and played in the match play format.

The captain of the S. Thomas’ team is Kamal Weerapperuma and captain of the Royal team is Hemasiri Subasinghe who are both over 60 years. Each team will consist of players of varying age groups with the minimum being 21 years.

A total of 30 matches will be played over 18 holes. Each win will have two points, one point each for a tie and the veterans who will play nine holes will get one point for a win. Overall, winners will be declared on the aggregated points of all flights.

Some old boys who live overseas are expected to take part. While there will be some funds from overseas, there are also a few sponsors of the event to generate funds.

The Awards ceremony will immediately follow the tournament.

The winners will be presented with a trophy. There will also be other prizes for the best pair, closest to the pin, longest drive and hole in one.
