Legendary cricketers Sanath Jayasuriya, Fervez Maharoof and Thisara Perera were timed out at the launch and player draft of the Cricket Legends Tournament as a section of the Press staged a walk-out unable to put up with a further delay at the Hilton Hotel in Colombo.
According to media invitations sent out, the event was to take place at 10 am and with no signs of its commencement, media personal after more than an hour’s wait decided to move out to attend to other functions and work at their desks.
Maharoof’s presence was visible as he chatted to some of the invitees and posed for photographs, but Jayasuriya and Thisara Perera were nowhere to be seen as their names appeared on the event’s agenda.
With cricket being the only thing in Sri Lanka that starts on time, there could have been no excuse for the failure of the legends to turn up on time.
The tournament is slated to be held at the Pallekele stadium in Kandy from March 8 over a two-week period.
According to the organisers, retired players from England, Australia, India, Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh are listed to take part in seven teams along with Sri Lanka players.
