Viruliya Sevana commemorates 10th anniversary

The Association of Retired Ex-Service Women, Viruliya Sevana, marked a significant milestone as it celebrated its 10th anniversary at Heenatikumbura Raja Viharaya on March 8th coinciding with the International Women’s Day. It was followed by their Annual General Meeting.

Addressing the gathering President of Viruliya Sevana Major Ramani Bandara highlighted the motto of Viruliya Sevana, “Yahaguna dam Weduma Uthum” translating to “Fostering positive qualities is invaluable” and emphasized the crucial relevance in today’s contemporary society and the members of the association will play a pivotal role in advocating these values within the community. She also drew an inspiring parallel of the gathering to the peaceful assemblies conducted by the heads of the Licchavi dynasty during the era of Gautama Buddha, accentuating the importance of collective wisdom and harmony.

Major Bandara further commended the unwavering support provided by Patron Mrs Ramya Weerakoon since the inception of the association and lauded her exemplary leadership which has served as a beacon of inspiration guiding the organization in its endeavours. The event solemnly remembered the contributions of Late Lt General Deshamanya Denis Perera the Founder of SriLanka Army Women’s Corps and late Air Vice Marshal Harry Goonatilake whose legacies continue to inspire.

Special guests were Former Regimental Commander of the Women’s Corps Major General Indira Wijerathna, Former Commanding Officer Lt Col Kumuduni Mutaliff while Mrs Indira Kahatapitiya Director KIK Engineering was the Guest of Honour.

Amitha Rohini (Rtd) Air Force, Vice President of Viruliya Sevana, was honoured as the inaugural recipient of the Ramya Weerakoon Award for Best Leadership, for her outstanding contributions and commitment to the association’s mission. Kumari Wickramasinghe (Rtd) Air Force was appointed as the incoming President, Viruliya Sevana for the year 2024-2025.

The 10th-anniversary celebration of Viruliya Sevana stands as a testament to a decade of unwavering commitment, resilience, and service to the community.
