Public Security Minister Tiran Alles has instructed IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon to probe the remark made by former President Maithripala Sirisena that he was aware of the real masterminds behind the Easter Sunday bomb attacks of April 2019.
Addressing the media at a function in Kandy, former President Sirisena disclosed that he knows the identities of the true perpetrators behind the bombings which claimed nearly 300 lives of people in several Churches and hotels.
“The suspects who are now in remand custody in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks are all minor offenders. The real culprits who planned the bombings are still roaming freely. I am ready to reveal the perpetrators of the Easter Sunday attacks and make a special statement in Court,” the former President has said.
Several Opposition MPs have urged the Police to question the former President with regard to his claim, which comes almost exactly four years after the tragic events that shocked the entire world. The former President was censured by the Supreme Court over his negligence to prevent the attacks.
