Methvan Fernando
St. Joseph’s College student Methvan Fernando swam the best at the demanding two-mile sea swim worked off at Mount Lavinia last Saturday where over 200 competitors splashed for honours on a bright and sunny day.
Methvan was undoubtedly the pick of the swimmers some of whom represented the Navy and were left behind by him in a confrontation that was described as one of the hardest in recent times.
He finished the course in a time of 43 minutes and 34.4 seconds ahead of second placed Akash Prabashwa who is also a student of St. Joseph’s College a school that has been in the forefront of swimming producing top calibre athletes in the mould of Conrad Francis who represented Sri Lanka at the Olympics.
Nine other swimmers had close calls finishing in the top ten.
The two-mile sea swim is now into its 85th year of competition and was conducted by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union.
