Former Maliyadeva College cricket captain Manjula Manatunga passed away on Thursday at the age of 59 after a prolonged illness, a family spokesman said.

He played for Maliyadeva from 1981 to 1984 as an all-rounder and later turned out for Kurunegala Sports Club before enrolling in the army’s fourth Battalion of the Gemunu Watch.

He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 2018 and leaves his wife Nimali, sons Nimendra and Nilesh and daughter Shehani.

His remains lie at Mahinda Panagoda Funeral Parlour, New Kandy Road, Thalangama and the cremation will take place today at the General Cemetery at Borella at 5.30 pm.

He will be given a funeral with full military honours and the final procession will start opposite the British School at Borella commencing at 4 pm.
