Ceylon Motor Cycle Club now known as the Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club is set to celebrate its 75th year with a Super Series 2024.
Motor racing in Ceylon commenced in the year 1948 with a few enthusiastic riders under the leadership of the late Wally de Zylva who enticed young riders to make it a success.
The first event called the Monsoon Reliability covering a distance of 461 miles commenced in the same year and continued for over 25 years without a break.
One of the key members of the Committee, Andrew Mirando, arrived on the scene in 1949 and the event was introduced in Nuwara Eliya on January 22, 1950. This also became the first ever road race in Ceylon which still continues during the festive season.
In 1951 the energetic Mirando also arranged the Circuit race meet at the Katukurunda air strip.
The Motor Racing Series for the year 2024 was announced on January27 along with the Champion of Champions Awards ceremony at the Cavalry Army Headquarters at Mutwall.
This year the Asian Motor Racing Club too will be a part of the Super Series while Automobile Sports (SLAS) which was banned by the former Minister of Sports too will be involved in organizing the 2024 Super Series.
