The Masters Women’s Hockey Association in Sri Lanka (MWHASL) embarked on a humble journey in 2017, bringing together renowned female hockey players with a shared vision. Their initial goal was to breathe new life into women’s hockey, which had gradually faded into obscurity in the country.
What began as a modest operation with a handful of individuals has blossomed into a movement that now proudly represents Sri Lanka on international stages, reclaiming the spotlight for female hockey players from the island.
Their presence in international competitions, rigorous training regimes, and collaborative endeavours serve a dual purpose: to showcase the prowess of Sri Lankan female athletes on a global platform and to inspire a new generation of dynamic women through the sport. Additionally, their efforts have fostered valuable partnerships with individuals from other nations, providing much-needed support to aspiring hockey players in need.
Recognising the untapped potential of hockey in rural areas, the MWHASL have proactively engaged in outreach initiatives. Each year, they host tournaments that not only foster camaraderie among members but also extend invitations to schools in rural regions, offering young girls the opportunity to explore their passion for the sport.
Having participated in two international Masters competitions and an international training programme, the MWHASL have successfully showcased the depth of talent within Sri Lanka’s female hockey community. Their presence has not only enlightened powerful nations about the strength of Sri Lankan female athletes but also underscored the nation’s commitment to nurturing and empowering women in sports.
