As expected with the pull-out of 10 leading schools, it was somewhat a cakewalk for Royal College, Isipathana College and St. Peter’s College to enter the Cup quarters of the inter-school rugby Sevens at the Royal College Sports Complex in Colombo yesterday.
Dharmaraja College, Science College, Vidyartha College, Prince of Wales College and Piliyandala Central College were the other teams to make it to the Cup quarters.
Royal pulled off a win over Nalanda College with the highest margin of 66-0 in one qualifying round game and Isipathna overcame St. Benedict’s College 28-5 while the Peterites beat Maliyadeva 31-0.
In the quarter final encounters of the Bowl segment St Benedict’s, Ananda College and Lumbini College recorded wins over Sri Sumangala, Nalanda and St Aloysius while Maliyadeva received a walk-over.
The Cup quarter finals are scheduled to be played from 9.40 am onwards today which will be followed by the Shield semi finals at 11.00 am and the Bowl semi finals from 11.40 am.
The Plate semi finals will be worked off from 12.20 pm and the Cup semi finals from 1.00 pm according to the schedule.
Isipathana are the defending champs and will have big hurdles to overcome with Royal and St. Peter’s also staking their claims to the title.
