More windows for school and club players

The management of Kandy District Cricket Association has made arrangements to conduct two tournaments for all member clubs in the district for the year 2024.

Kandy District Cricket Association, one of the pioneer District Cricket Associations affiliated to Sri Lanka Cricket has created an opportunity for many school leavers to enter the national pathway by conducting similar tournaments in the past.

These have highlighted many players who represented the district and provincial age group teams.

Players in the calibre of Kumar Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralidaran, Ruwan Kalpage, Piyal Wijetunga, Kaushalya Weeraratna, Chamara Kapugedera, Kosala Kulasekera, Sachith Pathirana, Niroshan Dikwella, Lahiru Kumara, Sadun Weerakkody and Matheesha Pathirana entered the national pathway through the local club and district structure.

Considering the importance of providing opportunity for youngsters, especially school leavers, clubs are permitted to include four school players in a team.

A 50-over limited overs tournament and a T20 event are also on the cards played among 21 member club teams.

T20 teams are divided into two groups. Matches are scheduled to commence in the third week of May.

Group ‘A’ teams – Old Zahirians SC, Kandy Saracens, Black Eagle SC, Kandy Prisons, Old Antonians SC, Kandy Youth CC, Old Rajans SC, Sutherland CC, Old Trinitarians SC, Rathiyans SC, Ekamuthu SC.

Group ‘B’ teams – Madawala CC, Sylvestrians CC, Visuvious SC, Bloomfield SC, Galagedera CC, Kandy CC, Blue Universal SC, Liverpool CC, Zelanicans SC, Gampola CC.

All matches will be played at Pallekelle Prisons ground and other available venues such as St. Anthony’s College, Trinity College, Dharmaraja College and Gampola Wickremabahu College.

In the limited overs competition all 21 teams are divided in to four groups.

Participating teams will be provided balls, umpires and scorers. A match referee will be assigned by the District Cricket Association.

The winning teams in the competition will be awarded the following:

Champions trophy and cash award, Runners-up trophy and cash award.

Individual awards will be awarded to: Player of the Tournament, Best Batsman, Best Bowler.

It will be a great opportunity for cricket loving public in the hill capital to witness a highly contested series of matches.
