Jayalakshmi Weerasinghe unveiled her debut Sinhala novel, “Sanda Keluma,” amidst a gathering of literary enthusiasts and dignitaries at the Hotel Gangadhari auditorium, Gorakana on April 21. The author is a retired Deputy School Principal of Sri Thaksala Maha Vidyalaya, Sarikkammulla. She carries a legacy intertwined with her late siblings, journalist and songwriter Saman Chandranath Weerasinghe, and journalist Ranjith Weerasinghe.
The launch was graced by the Chief Incumbent of Sarikkammulla Sirinandana Pirivena, Ven. Medauyangoda Dhammawimala Thera. The Principal of Gorakana Sisuviru Vidyalaya Ven. Kirinde Pawarasoma Thera, Deputy Principal of Mahanama College Ven. Kotawaye Muditha Thera and Rev. Fr. S. Priyadarshana Fernando were present as special guests. .
Dr. Padmini Siririmanna, Director of Studies at the American College of Higher Education, delivered the keynote address, illuminating the essence of the book. Published by S. Godage, “Sanda Keluma” intricately weaves a captivating narrative, delving into the essence of life along the Horethuduwa region, nestled along the banks of the Bolgoda River on the border between Colombo and Kalutara.
Through richly nostalgic prose, Jayalakshmi vividly portrays the landscape’s beauty, intertwined with cultural nuances, familial bonds, and societal dynamics.
The heart of the narrative beats through engaging dialogue and a compelling first-person perspective, offering readers an immersive experience into the lives of the characters. The author paints a vivid picture of Sinhalese traditions and values.
Central to the narrative is the lifestyle of the individuals from diverse backgrounds and occupations intertwined in a tapestry of mutual reliance and camaraderie.
