Dimuth Gunawardena
President of the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) Dimuth Gunawardena has decided to step down and give way to a new official to take over and run the affairs for rowing.
Gunawardena will be completing his second two year term in office next month and nominations are already rolling in that will be looked into on May 18. After going through the nominations the date for election will be decided on how many officials will be contesting for each post.
“I have decided to move out and give way so that new blood with fresh ideas will take over and continue to do a better job than what I did,” said Gunawardena.
“I know that a new person will give off his best with new ideas for the betterment of the sport. I got down a coach from Spain in Pedro Sanz who during his two year term produced medal winners in the Asian Coastal Rowing Championship. “We won a gold medal in single scull and a bronze medal in double sculls at the 2023 Asian Coastal Rowing Championship held in Thailand,” said Gunawardena.
Coastal rowing is done in the sea and to win medals is creditable for Sri Lankans. This is a new event and winning a medal shows what the Spanish coach has achieved.
When the nominations box will be opened on May 18 elections will be decided depending on how many candidates are there for each post. This will be done at the Diyawanna Rowing Centre in Battaramulla at 4 p.m.
