Five teams contest second NPL in Vavuniya

Five teams are taking part in the second Northern Premier League (NPL) cricket tournament that began at the Vavuniya Municipal Ground yesterday.

The event is being conducted by the Northern Province Cricket Association to promote the sport under the sponsorship of Sri Lanka Cricket, its president Yogendran Rathiban said.

Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mannar, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi district teams are contesting the tournament that provides a big boost for players in the Northern Province.

The teams go by the branding as Vavuniya Vikings, Jaffna Gladiators, Mullai Panthers, Kilinochchi Fighters and Mannar Kings.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth the promising leg spinner playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) was the best emerging player at last year’s tournament.

The NPL matches will be held on weekends and go on until May 19.

Yogendran said his association invites all cricket followers to patronize the matches which he assured would provide high quality action.

Live broadcast of the matches will be provided on social media platforms.
