There is overwhelming investor interest in the proposed 600-acre industrial zone in Trincomalee, said Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman Keith D. Bernard. This zone is to be developed jointly by the SLPA and the Board of Investment (BOI).

He said that global fertiliser producing companies along with solar products manufacturing firms and others industrial related companies have already expressed interest towards this Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The Chairman said that plans are underway to redevelop the Trincomalee Port as an industrial port. “There is a Master Plan prepared for this.”

Trincomalee is the fifth-largest natural harbour in the world and the SLPA and BOI now plans to advertise internationally and locally to call for proposals to attract more investors.

He also said that in addition to this the Ceylon-Italy Blue Economy Association (CIBEA) forged a sustainable path towards introducing green hydrogen and e-fuel bunkering in the Indian Ocean by taking the first step in implementing a roadmap centered around Trincomalee.

“This is a historic landmark as it has potential to transform Trincomalee into a global leader in sustainable development and establish the Green Corridor as a model for clean maritime fuel transportation for maritime transportation in the region,” he said.

This will be in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the University of Genoa, Italy, and the University of Moratuwa.

The Cabinet of Ministers had also approved Singapore’s Surbana Jurong for a tourism corridor from Verugal Aru to Arugam Bay which will help to transform Trincomalee into a a robust economic hub.
