Following the investigation on the alleged leak of the GCE Ordinary Level (OL) examination English question paper in Hasalaka using mobile phones, the Hasalaka Police have transferred two suspects to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The Officer-in-Charge of the Hasalaka Police Station, Thusitha Jayasekera, identified the suspects as a tuition master and his mother along with the mobile phones believed to have been used for the purpose.
This was a sequel to the initial inquiries, in accordance with the directive from Inspector General of Police, Deshabandu Thennakoon.
“The English tuition master (36), is a resident of Mahiyanganaya. He had been a tutor at a private tuition class in Hasalaka , known as Hasalaka Panhinda. During our investigation, it was found that the images of two or more questions were circulated within a WhatsApp group consisting of students and the tuition master,” said OIC Jayasekera.
Expressing the need for CID involvement due to the complexity of cyber-related investigations, OIC Jayasekera said, “We sought the expertise of the CID in this matter given their proficiency in investigations involving the cyber domain.”
In addition to lodging complaints at local police stations, Commissioner General of Examinations, H.J.M.C. Amith Jayasundara, has also lodged a formal complaint with the CID concerning irregularities uncovered during the ongoing GCE OL examination. Sources at the Examinations Department said that two instances of question paper leaks via mobile phones had been reported at two separate examination centres during the current OL examination, one in Kotahena and the other in Hasalaka.
