The Government has declared a special Vesak Activity Week in schools from May 21 to 26 to mark the State Vesak Festival – 2024.
The Education Ministry in a circular has instructed heads of Buddhist schools countrywide to organise Buddhist religious programs during Vesak Week.
Sil campaigns, meditation programs, shramadana campaigns to clean places of worship, visiting elders’ homes and children’s homes, Dhamma discussions and counseling sessions to explain noble human values and the harmful effects of drug and liquor addiction will be carried out during the week, Kurunegala District Senior Education Director W.M. Balasooriya said.
He said nearly 9,500 experienced and well-versed meditation advisors belonging to the clergy and laity are to be deployed by the Education Ministry for this purpose. Nearly three million students, Pirivena students and novice bhikkhus will participate in these programs with their school principals, elders, parents and teachers at their schools.
