Veteran sports journalist Lal Gunasekara, who was at one time a stalwart of the Sunday Observer passed away on Saturday (12) aged 73 after a brief illness.
Lal Gunasekara dedicated five decades to sports journalism after he began his career in 1971 at the Daily News.
A vibrant reporter who called a spade a spade, Gunasekera specialized in covering rugby, basketball and badminton.
He was absorbed into the Sunday Observer where he eventually became its Sports Editor, holding the position until he retired in 2008.
He then joined The Island news desk where he functioned until 2022.
Gunasekara had a strong Will and always stood by what he wrote in covering issues and events in sports and never compromised on his ethics and principles.
He covered more than one Rugby Asiad as well as the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester for the Sunday Observer and Daily News.
