Kandy FC and Galle FC will meet in the final of the Lanka Football Cup, organised by the Lanka Sports Group at the City League ground in Colombo today (19).
In the first semi-final, Kandy FC displayed their prowess to crush Jaffna FC with a rousing 5-0 win. On the other hand Galle FC displayed their talent to edge out the reigning champions Colombo FC 2/1 in a closely contested game.
The defeat of Colombo that had three Nigerian players and three Sri Lanka team members came as a shock to many fans. Despite their formidable line up, they were unable to withstand the relentless attack from the Galle squad.
Their playmaker was 43-year-old EB Channa who emerged as the key player for Galle, leading the charge with his attacking style. WM Chameera and V. Yegesh scored the crucial goals for Galle FC to book their berth in the final.
Kavindu Ishan, Chamod Dilshan, Mohomed Fazal, Mohomed Akib and Shanel Sandesh had no opposition when scoring the goals in Kandy FC’s 5-0 crushing of Jaffna FC.
The tournament offers a prize of rupees one million to the champions, with the runners-up set to receive Rs 500,000 according to the organisers.
The tournament is the brainchild of Saif Yusoof, the founder of Colombo Football Club and Managing Director of Expo Lanka Freight.
