All night mail trains to and from upcountry to Colombo were cancelled yesterday owing to fallen trees and boulders that have blocked the tracks at several places, an official of the Railways Department said.

He said that at least 15 trees and huge boulders had fallen on the tracks and vital signals have also gone on the blink owing to the inclement weather.

Power interruptions have caused significant issues with the railway signal system, particularly beyond the Nanu Oya station, he said.

He called upon motorists to exercise caution at railway crossings, as signal failures are possible due to power breakdowns.

Train drivers were also advised to be vigilant if there is no signal or if the electric bells continue to ring with only a red signal at the crossings.

The Department of Meteorology has forecast more wet weather for today and in the coming days throughout most parts of the country. – LB
