Prominent lawyer and President’s Counsel and the first Chairman of the Colombo Port City Commission, Gamini Marapana passed away yesterday at the age of 82.
Born on January 1, 1942, Marapana received his primary education at S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and later attended the University of Peradeniya and Sri Lanka Law College. He was sworn in as a President’s Counsel in 1990, marking a milestone in his legal career.
Marapana was a prominent figure in the legal fraternity and the brother of former Minister Tilak Marapana, PC. Gamini Marapana’s son Naveen is also a senior lawyer.
He appeared in several high-profile and highly publicised court cases in Sri Lanka and his leadership as the first Chairman of the Colombo Port City Commission was highly commended.
The last rites of Marapana will be performed at the Borella Public Cemetery today.
