Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Talduwa yesterday said their investigations into the incident of gunfire being opened at actor Uddika Premaratne last year, has revealed that a police officer was involved in the shooting of the actor’s vehicle in Anuradhapura.
Premaratna had been an Actor cum MP at the time of the incident. Premaratne, who served as an MP from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) representing the Anuradhapura District, resigned from Parliament in February 2024. He cited that his resignation was due to the lack of opportunities to implement his plans to create a change in the country. The findings suggest that the attack on Premaratne’s car near his residence in Anuradhapura was carefully orchestrated, said DIG Talduwa. The investigators said that the Directors and Assistant Directors meticulously planned this dramatic episode. “The full extent of this staged drama will be uncovered once the main suspect is apprehended,” they said. DIG Talduwa said the suspected assailant was an Assistant Superintendent of Police who is currently overseas, having fled the country after the incident.
Police investigations are continuing in the light of new leads, said DIG Talduwa.
