Death of Trinity rugby forward
Trinity College’s rugby forward Shabeer Ahamed who was in the present squad and played in the two practice games died in Kandy on Thursday (13) and his Janaza took place at Katugastota Muslim burial ground the same day.
A family spokesman said Ahamed’s death was due to multi organ failure following pneumonia.
Vidyartha cause opening shock
Vidyartha College opened the new inter-school rugby season with a shock win over St. Joseph’s College by 27 points to 22 at Havelock Park on Friday.
Kandy beat Matale
The men’s T20 cricket tournament of the National Sports Festival began at the Police ground and in the first match Kandy beat Matale by 39 runs. Kandy batting first scored 164 for 8 in 20 overs and in reply Matale were all-out for 125 in 18.4 overs.
In the second game Eastern beat Kandy Zone II by one wicket. Kandy Zone II made 138 all out and in replay Eastern scored 144 for 9.
In another game Kandy beat Nuwara Eliya by three wickets at Police ground. Nuwara Eliya batting first scored 155 for 9 in 20 overs and in reply Kandy scored 158 for 7.
Kandy Zone beat Eastern Zone
Kandy Zone I did well to beat Eastern by six wickets in their match played at the Prison ground Pallekelle. Eastern batting first scored 183 in 44 overs. Al Nahyan scored 47, Menura Akarqashana 57 while Sumedha Prasad and Lakvin Abeyasinghe took three wickets each.
Kandy Zone I in reply scored 186 for 4 in 40 overs with Isuru Pannala unbeaten on 77.
