Jizzy, a pioneering artist in the Sinhala EDM (Electronic Dance Music) scene, is set to release his groundbreaking new album “Anuragi.” In this interview, Jizzy shares insights into his inspirations, creative process, challenges faced, and collaborations with emerging talent, and his vision for the future of Sinhala EDM. Discover how Jizzy is redefining the musical landscape in Sri Lanka with “Anuragi.”

Q: What inspired you to create this new album?
A: I’ve always wanted to create an album packed with Sinhala EDM songs because I haven’t seen any Sinhala EDM artist release an album like “Anuragi” in years. But I didn’t know where to begin. So, I just told myself, “Jizzy! Just do it.” Then, I started working on the album by reaching out to some fantastic upcoming artists in Sri Lanka.

Q: Can you share any specific events or experiences that influenced the themes or songs on this album?
A: While creating these tracks, my goal was to convey my authentic emotions through the music-making process. Each music producer brings their unique style and perspective to their creations, and I aimed to do the same by incorporating fresh sounds.
Some of these tracks are based on real-life experiences from my own journey, while others were drawn from common narratives within society.

Q: How did the creative process for this album differ from your previous work?
A: I’ve been on a completely new musical journey because I’ve never tried blending two cultures or musical styles before, not just genres. For example, I have a deep appreciation for the Bansuri flute, and I wanted to infuse it with an electronic music vibe without compromising its essence. This meant constantly fine-tuning the production process to strike the perfect balance between the traditional and the modern. Many of the songs have a Middle Eastern influence because I believe that music isn’t always about being hardcore. Sometimes, you have to create something that people can truly connect with, which is why I heavily incorporated Middle Eastern musical cultures.

Q: Were there any unique challenges you faced while producing this album?
A: As I was new to these sounds, I approached the blending process with caution. I understood the importance of preserving the authenticity of instruments like the Bansuri, Dholak, and others. When mixing the album, I focused on maintaining the perfect balance between the rawness of real-life instruments, the vocals, and every other element in the composition. It was a meticulous process to ensure that each component retained its integrity while contributing to the overall harmony of the music.

Q: How would you describe the musical style of this album?
A: There are various styles because some singers aren’t comfortable with my approach. It’s not their fault; it’s simply their preference in music. If I were to categorize my music style as a genre, it would be Sinhala EDM. Within this genre, I explore sub-genres such as Trap, House, Baile Funk, Future Bass, and Experimental music. Each style offers its own unique flavour and allows me to experiment with different sounds and rhythms.

Q: How do you think your sound has evolved since your last release?
A: I believe that music is constantly evolving, just like the people involved in its creation. As music producers, artists, singers, and all others continue to grow and develop, so does the music itself. After presenting this album to esteemed figures like DIMI3, I received positive feedback on the production quality. Additionally, when I shared trailers and teasers through social media platforms, the response was overwhelmingly positive. It’s heartening to see the enthusiasm and support from the audience, indicating that the album is resonating with them.

Q: Are there any new genres or musical elements that you’ve experimented with in this album?
A: Yes, I experimented with flamenco-style guitars, acoustic drums, very old bongo sounds, and more to create a diverse sonic landscape. During a trip to the Sinharaja rainforest, I was inspired by the natural sounds around me: birds chirping, water flowing, and more. My friend Dhanushka, also known as DASHHERTZ, helped me record these sounds while we were exploring Sinharaja. I incorporated some of these recorded nature sounds into the album to enhance the overall atmosphere and add depth to the music.

Q: Did you collaborate with any other artists or producers on this album? If so, who, and what was that experience like?
A: The album features nine tracks, with contributions from talented artists including Anali De Silva, Left Lovers, Scoob, Pabasara Hansani, Hansani Erandi, Perzona (also known as Pinsara Madubashana, a contestant on “The Voice”), Thishakya Hapuarachchi, my sister Dulhani Nisansala, Madhuka Jayamanne, and Nikita Debnath. Each of them brought their unique talents and energy to the project.
However, I faced some challenges during collaborations with other individuals, resulting in the unfortunate decision to cut down four tracks due to misunderstandings and internal issues. It’s a sobering reality of the industry that not everyone shares the same vision or aspirations. Despite these setbacks, the artists I mentioned earlier were amazing to work with, demonstrating professionalism and friendliness throughout the album-making process.
Big shout-out to LeoDora, Hansani Tharanga, Diz & Omega: The Writers for writing the entire album alongside the other writers. Without them, there is no “Anuragi” at all

Q: What are the main themes or messages you hope to convey through this album?
A: In summary, the message conveyed is that love is genuine. It includes both highs and lows, and some people may face tough times. However, love endures as the ultimate answer. Therefore, it’s important to cherish and protect your love.

Q: Is there a particular track on the album that holds special meaning for you? Can you tell us the story behind it?
A: The track “Suranthaye” with Perzona holds a special place. It delves into the theme of a clandestine relationship between individuals from two married couples who share the same bed, essentially depicting infidelity. However, it’s not solely about cheating. “Suranthaye” presents a very intimate and significant moment shared between the characters in bed. Shout-out to the writer Maduwantha for the amazing lyrics of it.

Q: What are your plans for promoting the album? Are there any special events or performances scheduled?
A: I have some plans to create “Anuragi Part 2,” incorporating the tracks that were initially left out. Additionally, I’m considering producing a music video for one of the tracks from the album. However, this will depend on the workflow and how things progress.

Q: How does this album reflect your personal journey or growth as an artist?
A: As a music producer, I discovered many new things while making this album. I found new sounds, met new people, and learned new techniques for making music. It was a completely new experience from every angle. I frequently listened to music from artists like Anirudh Ravichander, Pritam, Space Laces, Skrillex, and more, and I took some inspiration from their music.

Q: What are your plans following the release of this album? Any upcoming tours or new projects in the works?
A: I am preparing for upcoming collaborations with Stereominds and delving into pop music. I am reconsidering how I announce new music and tours. Instead of my usual spur-of-the-moment style, I am considering a more organised approach. This might involve sharing sneak peeks on social media and announcing tour dates early. This change is all about building excitement among fans and ensuring that my new projects get noticed in the busy music scene.

Q: Where do you see your music career heading in the next few years?
A: It’s a challenging question to address. Ultimately, my goal is to attract dedicated music fans who enjoy powerful and intense sounds. For instance, the Lost Lands Music Festival showcases some of the most intense EDM performances I’ve ever seen, featuring artists who delve into aggressive genres like Dubstep and Trap. I aim to build a similar following here in Sri Lanka – a loyal fanbase that appreciates the sheer power and intensity of the music.
When I step onto a stage, I want the audience to feel the raw energy and perhaps even be a little overwhelmed by it. That’s my vision of music – it’s about embracing intensity and pushing boundaries.

Q: How do you feel now that the album is about to be released?
A: It’s like taking a break from the heavy stuff I mentioned earlier. The album is both calming and lively, so anyone can enjoy listening to it. I’m happy to release such a cool project like this.

Q: If you could describe this album in three words, what would they be?
A: Rebirth, Renewal, Resurgence.
