Political sources said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe plans to refer his recommendation again to the Constitutional Council (CC) to extend the service of Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam by six months in accordance with the powers vested in him by the Constitution.

According to the sources, the President will forward the recommendation to the Constitutional Council to extend the service of Sanjay Rajaratnam for six months.

A senior spokesperson for the Presidential Secretariat said that President Wickremesinghe will refer the legality of the decision of the three civil activists of the Constitutional Council to the Chairman of the Constitutional Council, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

Although the 19th Amendment to the Constitution passed a clause that the President should recommend the names of individuals to the Constitutional Council for the positions of Chief Justice and Attorney General, it was done away by the 20th Amendment.

Again, under the 21st Amendment, the same clause of the 19th Amendment has been included. The senior spokesperson said that if the Constitutional Council rejects a name recommended by the President, that name can be referred to it again.
