Dark Horse DS Senanayake College kept their cool and survived some frightening moments to hold on to a history-making 14-10 win over the fancied Trinity College in their Dialog trophy inter school league rugby match at Havelock Park yesterday.

Not to be under estimated after they beat Dharmaraja College 44-12 in their opening match, DS Senanayake probably sealed the match in the first half itself as they took a 14 points lead with two tries, the first one through their play-making centre Sehanda Umagiliyage who made a high-ball kick charged down, collected and raced his way to touch down.

If that was not enough the DSS forwards showed their pack will not play second fiddle to any other rival team as they produced their second try through a rolling maul with second rower Lankesh Wickremasinghe doing the honours.

Winger Janindu Wijeratne converted both tries.

Overall Trinity were not allowed to play the way they would have desired as the home team players produced some effective tackling and matched them man for man.

The only time Trinity got into some rhythm was when their skipper and centre Anahas Kodithuwakku crossed the line to score to make the scores 14-5 and later through a second try made it 14-10.

But DSS made many forays into Trinity’s half and in the final 10 minutes of play came short of scoring by inches as they as Trinity out up a resolute defence although they had three penalties offered in front of the posts which they opted for scrums.

In the final five minutes Trinity came close to scoring by inches and the DSS forwards did the same in defence as the Kandy school did moments before until referee Gihan Yatawara blew his final whistle.

Overall DSS had more ball than Trinity to score but made several mistakes although nothing could have stood in the way of making history.
