Mundra Port: Adani Green Energy which is investing around USD one billion in two wind-power plants in Mannar and Pooneryn, has for the first time designed special ‘bird-diverting’ turbines for the proposed Mannar wind power plant.

During a visit to the Adani wind-power turbine and equipment manufacturing facility built in the 400 hectare Mundra harbor owned and operated by Adani New Industries Ltd, an Adani official said that they have engineered Artificial Intelligence-powered (AI) wind turbines especially for the Mannar wind-power facility. “This is to detect any incoming bird movements and if birds fly towards the rotor blades it will self-shut down.”

All the three rotor blades have large red stickers which also will drive away birds.

“The peak bird migration season is actually low season for wind power generators (low wind speed) and hence the risk of bird collision is low at that time specially at the proposed Mannar USD 500 million wind-power plant to be operated by the Adani Group.”

During very low or no wind period, the blades do not rotate and no power is generated.

“In this case, we are not shutting down our wind turbines and they will always be operational. That’s the beauty of wind energy. As long as we have wind, it will generate power.”

He said that since all the wind power plant equipment is manufactured in India they will also blend with the Sri Lankan environment.

Adani officials said that they will be investing around USD 100 billion until 2030 to increase their green energy abilities in an area of around 800 acres.

“We wish to play our part towards taking India and some regional countries towards decarbonisation with new technology and help create a Greener planet,” he said.
