Colombo’s nightlife has been notably enhanced by the introduction of Gara, a sophisticated cocktail bar at Ketam House on Aloe Avenue, Marine Drive. Since its opening on June 15, Gara has rapidly become a popular destination for both local residents and tourists, attracted by its distinctive beverage menu and elegant atmosphere.

Gara isn’t just another bar; it’s a curated experience. Under the expertise of head mixologist Indian Valentine Barboza, the bar offers a selection of handcrafted cocktails that are as delightful as they are unique. Each drink features an array of international spirits and a rotating menu that highlights local natural ingredients.

The interior of Gara blends modern decor with a cozy feel. Intimate seating arrangements and ambient lighting create a welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for both quiet evenings and lively nights out. Plans for live music events and themed nights promise to keep the vibe exciting.

Ketam House, where Gara is housed, is the brainchild of D.M. Silva. Silva told the Sunday Observer that Ketam House is a fusion of Sri Lankan and Malaysian cuisine. An extension of the renowned Ceylon Crab House in Kuala Lumpur, Ketam House prides itself on using organic ingredients in both its food and cocktails.

Silva emphasized a philosophy of purity and authenticity. “We refrain from using artificial colours in our cocktails,” he said. “Take the Piña Colada, for example. While many places add colours for appearance, we focus on the raw, original taste. Cocktails don’t have to be colourful to be enjoyable. Our clarified versions maintain authenticity and cater to the Eastern palate.”

Silva’s culinary journey is a fascinating one. Having introduced Sri Lankan flavours to Malaysia with great success, he now aims to bring a taste of Malaysia to Sri Lanka. “We do not compromise on quality,” Silva said. “In Sri Lanka, people often prioritise portion size over quality and authenticity. With our abundant access to seafood, we aim to maximise the seafood experience.”

Gara and Ketam House together represent a fusion of cultures and a focus on quality, offering an unparallelled dining and nightlife experience in Colombo.
