Kyle Abeysinghe and Ganga Seneviratne have received wild card entries to the Paris Olympic Games having reached the pinnacle of their swimming careers.

They became the swimmers with the highest points at the World Aquatic Championships held in Doha 2024.

Abeysinghe and Seneviratne will swim for Sri Lanka at the Paris La Defense Arena in the Men’s 100m Freestyle event and Women’s 100m Backstroke event respectively.

The youngest of the Abeysinghe family, Kyle will swim the 100m Freestyle on July 30 and is the only Sri Lanka swimmer to win two medals at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Nassau, Bahamas. He won two silver medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle events.

Abeysinghe’s swimming journey hasn’t been as smooth as he would have wished and took a break from swimming due to medical reasons in 2018.

But his strong comeback in early 2023 with hard work and determination turned a new Chapter as he became the long course and short course National champion in 2023 leading him to Paris 2024 as the highest world aquatics points achiever at the moment in Sri Lanka swimming.

Ganga achieved her qualification with 688 FINA points in the 100M backstroke with a time of 1:04.08.

Ganga and Kyle’s dream run have brought them the opportunity of participating at the iconic epitome of sports the Olympics marking the best inspiration for the next crop of swimmers to propel Sri Lanka swimming. (TBR)
