Thailand will allow visa-free entry for travellers from 93 countries and territories including Sri Lanka from tomorrow, July 15. This is the first time that Sri Lankans could travel to Thailand without obtaining a paper visa. Thai citizens can already visit Sri Lanka visa-free, apart from a US$ 10 processing fee.
This is an increase from the current 57 countries, with visitors allowed to stay for up to 60 days from the earlier 30 days, according to the Ministry of Interior in Thailand. However, all visitors should have proof of funds, accommodation and return/onward tickets and entry is at the discretion of the immigration officers at the airports.
People from these nations will be welcome as tourists or for short-term business purposes, Ministry spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul said. The number of countries eligible for visa on arrival will also increase to 31. Foreign arrivals to Thailand this year rose 35 percent from the corresponding period in 2023, to 18.2 million, generating revenue of 858 billion baht (US$ 24 billion). China, Malaysia and India were the biggest sources of tourists so far in 2024. Around 350,000 Sri Lankans travel to Thailand annually. Also set for July 15 will be the addition of a so-called Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), which targets digital nomads, freelancers and visitors looking to learn skills such as cooking and martial arts. The new visa category permits holders to stay for up to 180 days and is valid for five years. However, applicants will have to visit the Thai Embassy in their country to apply for the DTV. Thailand will also permit visiting students who earn a bachelor’s degree or higher in Thailand to stay for one year after graduation to seek a job, travel within Thailand or conduct other related activities such as research.
