In an impressive display, S Thomas’ College defeated an enterprising DS Senanayake College by 29-15 in their Dialog Schools ‘A’ Division League Rugby match held at Mount Lavinia yesterday.
S Thomas’ scored three goals, one try and one penalty to accumulate their 29 points, while DS Senanayake managed one goal and one try for their 15 points.
The match began with a strong start for S Thomas’ as prop forward Sithul Perera touched down near the left post in the third minute and fly-half Yehan Bulathsinhalage successfully converted giving them an early 7-0 lead.
In the sixth minute, DS Senanayake’s Number Eight Thimath Jithnula scored their first try and fly-half Sehanda Umagiliyage converted leveling the score at 7-7.
S Thomas’ regained the lead in the 22nd minute with their second try and the conversion by Bulathsinhalage was unsuccessful, making it 12-7. Just before halftime, Sithul Perera completed his second try breaking through DS’s defence and Bulathsinhalage made the conversion giving S Thomas’ a 19-7 lead at the break.
Eleven minutes into the second half, DS Senanayake’s Sehanda Umagiliyage landed a 35-meter penalty kick reducing the deficit to 10-19.
In the 52nd minute, Thomians’ fullback Akith Cooray scored their fourth try and Bulathsinhalage converted, extending their lead to 26-10.
Bulathsinhalage then scored a rare 50-meter penalty in the 62nd minute, further stretching the lead to 29-10.
DS Senanayake scored their second try through flanker Kaveesha Jananjaya in the dying moments of the match that was unconverted, leaving the final score at 29-15 in favour of S Thomas’ College.
