President announces candidacy for Presidential Election

President Ranil Wickremesinghe said for the first time that he will run in the upcoming Presidential Election (PE) and has already deposited the money.

He was speaking during the ‘Ekwa Jaya Gamu – Api Galle’ public rally yesterday, July 27 at the Galle Municipal Council Stadium.

The President said he has never shied away from challenges and that it is his political practice to fulfill his responsibilities. He reaffirmed his commitment to move the country forward as promised.

Over 50 Ministers and MPs from various political parties, including the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), former Ministers and over 15,000 residents from the Galle district were present. They gathered to learn about the Government’s program and the path ahead, vowing to work toward the President’s victory in the PE.

President Wickremesinghe emphasised the importance of adhering to the current program agreed upon with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He said that any claims suggesting they are operating outside this framework are false and it could jeopardise the nation.

The President said that he is running as an Independent candidate in this year’s PE. He expressed his goal of uniting the country and called upon all politicians to set aside their political differences and work together towards building a better Sri Lanka for the youth.

Ministers Ali Sabry P.C., Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, Manusha Nanayakkara, Minister of State Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Galle District Coordinating Committee Co-Chairman and Galle District MP Sampath Athukorala and MP Ishaq Rahuman, representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) also spoke.
