Ven. Galboda Gnanissara Thera, affectionately known as Podi Hamuduruwo

It was early 2017, and an elderly Buddhist monk, accompanied by a relatively young monk, was walking along a suburban road in one of the world’s most advanced economies. Frequently, they were interrupted by groups of people—some spontaneously parking their ultra-modern vehicles by the roadside upon seeing him. These were people from all faiths and walks of life, stopping to greet and worship him. To each person, he gently tied a blessed string on their right hand, saying, “Sabbe Buddha Balappaththa….”

Despite meeting most of them for the first time, he remained unperturbed, continuing with a kind smile. “Do it with heart,” he advised the young monk, as he offered a “Seevali Yanthra” to each person, wishing them the best of luck. Occasionally, he would suggest, “Visit Sri Lanka.” Little did these people know, they were being blessed by one of the most influential Theravada Buddhist prelates in Asia.

A top corporate leader from Europe once shared an anecdote about his visit to Colombo. He visited a city temple and met a monk who welcomed him more warmly than at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake. He recalled the monk’s greeting, “Welcome to Sri Lanka,” with a genuine, warm gesture. Little did he know, that monk was not just a spiritual guide but a self-made ambassador and a national icon of religious leadership of the country. As Sri Lankan Buddhists, it was a privilege to have had the opportunity to see the extraordinary life and leadership he has led.

The essence of Kalyanamitta

Ven. Galboda Gnanissara Thera, affectionately known as Podi Hamuduruwo, epitomised the Buddhist teaching of “Vishwasa Parama Gnathi” (Faith is the Greatest Kin) through every aspect of his life, conduct, and practice. This venerable principle underscores the profound connection and trust that faith engenders among individuals, cultivating a sense of community that extends towards the fundamental tenets of Buddhist philosophy.

In embodying this ideal, Podi Hamuduruwo fostered an environment where mutual respect and trust flourished, creating bonds that united his disciples and followers in a shared spiritual journey. His unwavering commitment to this teaching not only highlighted his moral leadership but also demonstrated the timeless relevance of Buddhist wisdom in nurturing harmonious and cohesive communities.

In Buddhism, the concept of “kalyanamitta” or spiritual friendship, is revered as a crucial element on the path to enlightenment. A kalyanamitta is more than a friend; they are a guide, a mentor, and a source of inspiration, who helps one navigate the complexities of life with wisdom and compassion. Podi Hamuduruwo epitomised this ideal, serving as a true kalyanamitta to countless individuals from both the Sangha and lay societies.

Through his conduct as a kalyanamitta, Podi Hamuduruwo benefited people ranging from State heads, including Presidents, to small and medium enterprise (SME) owners in rural villages, all of whom received the same level of attention to detail and care. His ability to cultivate deep, meaningful relationships based on mutual respect and understanding was unparalleled. He provided not only spiritual guidance but also practical support, helping others to grow and develop in all aspects of their lives. Through his example, he demonstrated the profound impact that a genuine kalyanamitta can have on one’s life journey.

Podi Hamuduruwo set himself apart from the rest by being a true friend to human civilisation in his effort to preserve the environment and enrich society’s standards. His initiatives often extended beyond spiritual teachings to encompass efforts in environmental conservation and promoting sustainable practices. By fostering a deep respect for nature and encouraging mindful living, he instilled a sense of responsibility towards the planet and future generations.

Among his many accomplishments is the establishment of the Jinarathana Vocational Training Institute, one of the first non- governmental institutions in Sri Lanka to introduce a Government-recognised Diploma in English. This course, which emphasised discipline, continence, and unity, set a new standard in education, fostering success through humility and promptness.

Podi Hamuduruwo’s pioneering spirit also brought Sri Lanka its first audio-visual language learning platform, a technique he introduced after a visit to England in 1976. This innovation, which started at the Gangaramaya Temple, provided a guiding light to many, including the children of Security Forces personnel who had dropped out of school, helping them secure a brighter future.

The Sri Jinaratana Centre, under Podi Hamuduruwo’s guidance, has empowered countless young people with practical skills, offering over 50 technical courses in areas such as electronics, motor mechanism, welding, and electric wiring. His innovative approaches have consistently aimed at sustaining the country’s values and supporting its people, regardless of their religion or race. His compassion extends to the most vulnerable—elders and children—who receive special care at the Gangaramaya Temple.

Paragon of leadership

Podi Hamuduruwo’s leadership was characterised by an unwavering commitment to the principles of Buddhism and a profound dedication to the betterment of society. Taking on the administrative responsibilities of running a temple from a young age, he exemplified leadership that extends into cultural, social, and educational spheres. From his early days, Podi Hamuduruwo was committed to making the temple a sanctuary for all, a place where spiritual, cultural, and social welfare intertwine.

His vision materialised in the building of the Seema Malakaya, a serene floating temple that symbolises peace and unity.
