Vidyarathana boxers break 10-year hoodoo

Vidyarathana University College, Horana (VUC) became the undisputed champions at the 53rd T.B. Jayah Novices Boxing meet after a lapse of 10 years at the Siri Piyaratne Primary School Padukka yesterday.

The boxers from VUC won three gold medals and two silver medals to regain the coveted trophy for the first time since 2014.

St Sylvester’s College, Kandy (SSCK) were runners up winning two gold medals and two silver medals while Peradeniya Central College had to settle for third position winning two gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals.

The winners for VUC were Asliya Akeerna (35-37kg), Theekshana Sadaru Priyadarshan (43-45kg) and Binul Dulnada (44-46kg) while KDH Sathsara (33-35kg) and Vihanga Prabashwara (41-43kg) were runners up.

Sathsara lost a close duel with Zahira’s Z Abdulrahman while Prabashwara was consoled with the Best Loser’s award after suffering a split decision against hard hitting RN Dilshan of Koraboruwana MV in the 41-43kg weight.

DS Senanayake College’s Vidushan Sansitha Hettiarachchi who prevailed in a tough duel against Wattegama Central College’s DGKD Navarathne in the Youth (51-54kg) final was adjudged the Best Boxer of the meet.

Boxing Association of Sri Lanka Vice President Cdr Udaya Kumaratunga was the chief guest at the finals.
