National People’s Power (NPP) MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said that the Government is levelling accusations against us based on a statement by K.D. Lalkantha two and a half years ago.

She said, “Some political parties who fear the NPP’s victory are making baseless accusations. What comrade Lalkantha meant was that the Aragalaya wanted a change of power at that time, but it didn’t happen even though the Executive left. What happened instead was the Legislature appointing the same group of people who were rejected by the public.”

She said what should have happened was the dissolution of Parliament and the people given a chance to elect a new Government. Even Comrade Lalkantha said that Parliament should have been dissolved accordingly.

Dr. Amarasuriya said any Sri Lankan citizen has the right to say that, not only comrade Lalkantha. That demand is not undemocratic. It is anti-democratic to run Parliament without a mandate while postponing elections.

“Let’s be clear, Comrade Lalkantha did not ask anyone to raid Parliament, nor to torch, burn or assault anyone. Those who are troubled about his statement think it as an advantage for them because they have lost all their slogans. Now they have fallen so low that they cannot question our policies or pin anything negative on us. So it’s obvious that the political parties who are unable to overcome their own shortcomings are spreading rumours and fake news today,” she added.
