Over 18,000 in fray for School Games

More than 18,000 athletes from over 2000 schools will participate in the Samaposha Provincial Schools Games 2024 that will be held in five Provinces and scheduled to begin on August 21.

The athletes will go all out to showcase their skills across 70 competitive events that will be organized in collaboration with the Provincial Education Offices. The events will be held concurrently from August to September 13 with the participation of athletes from these five Provinces.

The events will be powered by Samaposha for the eighth year running and will begin with the Uva Provincial Games at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla from August 21 to 24.

The second Provincial Games will be held in the Southern Province at the Kotawila ground in Matara from August 27 to 30.

Eastern Province will conduct the third Samaposha Provincial Schools Games at the Weber Stadium in Batticaloa from September 5 to 9.

The North Western Provincial Sports Festival is scheduled to be held at the Welagedara Stadium, Kurunegala from September 7 to 11.

The final sports event the North Central Province Games will be held at the Public Stadium in Anuradhapura from September 10 to 13.

The Provincial education department is taking steps to award trophies, certificated and medals to the winning schools and athletes.

Speaking at the Media briefing held at the Foundation Institute on Tuesday (6), all representatives from the respective Provincial Education Ministries thanked the sponsors Samaposha for coming forward to support the Games as they need the money to take sports to national level. They also need the money to reconstruct stadiums so that they children can enjoy their sports.

“We are happy to note that our food is consumed by children with the assurance that they will develop strength and a stronger body,” said Manjula Dahanayake the Director and Chief Executive of CBL Foods to mark the occasion.
