Asia Rugby is awaiting a report from Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) which is now under a government Authority, to ascertain what action could be taken against the coach of St. Peter’s College Sanath Martis who is reported to have slapped one of his players last Sunday after winning their match against Vidyartha College in Kandy.
Trophy-winning highly priced coach Martis is said to have slapped the unnamed player who according to an eye witness had provoked supporters of Vidyartha by showing them the final scores that read 42-3 in a gesture of appalling defeat.
Martis is said to have ‘punished’ the player for provoking rival supporters in the presence of a College master.
Asia Rugby’s CEO Ben Van Rooyen is reported to have said he is expecting SLR to officially convey to them (Asia Rugby) the circumstances that led to the incident and the ensuing repercussions.
Retired naval officer, Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando currently heads the government Authority running rugby in the island and is reported to have directed the Schools Rugby Football Association to probe the matter and submit a report.
