The Department of Meteorology yesterday issued a ‘Red’ alert warning for heavy rains in several provinces and districts today.
Showers will occur, at times, in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and the Nuwara Eliya districts, a spokesman for the Department said.
The prevailing showers are expected to continue in the Southwestern part of the island due to the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, the spokesman said.
Heavy showers of about 150 mm are likely at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, he said.
The general public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
A flood warning was issued yesterday in the Bulathsinhala, Palindanuwara, and Madurawala Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions over the next 48 hours after the water levels in the Kuda Ganga kept rising, posing flood threats over the next 48 hours in the Bulathsinhala, Palindanuwara, and Madurawala Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions, an official of the Irrigation Department said.
The official said that considerable rainfall has occurred in the upstream catchment areas of Kuda Ganga Sub Basin of Kalu River at 9.00 a.m. yesterday.
By analysing the current rainfall and river water levels of Hydrological Stations in Kalu Ganga, it is warned that there is a possibility of a flood occurring in the low-lying areas of Kuda Ganga and Maguru Ganga valleys in the Bulathsinhala, Madurawala and Palinda Nuwara D/S Divisions in the next 48 hours, they said.
