Inauguration ceremony of the MSc in public procurement and supply chain management programme

The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) is a pioneering national university in Sri Lanka designed to provide education through open and distance learning methods. The Faculty of Management Studies of the Open University Sri Lanka has over 40 years of experience in offering a variety of programmes including master’s programmes, degree programmes, certificate courses, diplomas and postgraduate degree programmes. Recently, the Faculty of Management Studies launched a new postgraduate degree programme, MSc in Public Procurement and Supply Chain Management. This programme is for individuals seeking a postgraduate qualification in public procurement and supply chain management. A distinctive feature of this programme is its status as the first postgraduate qualification offered in public procurement in Sri Lanka.

The Open University of Sri Lanka proudly held the Inauguration ceremony for the second intake of its MSc in Public Procurement and Supply Chain Management Programme on 22nd August 2024, at Waters Edge, Battaramulla. The event marked another important milestone in the university’s efforts to provide specialized, industry-relevant postgraduate education.

The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome speech delivered by Prof. Nalin Abeysekara, Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies. Prof. Nalin Abeysekara extended his heartfelt congratulations to the incoming students and emphasized the strategic significance of the MSc program in the current economic landscape. He highlighted the Faculty’s commitment to providing a holistic and practical education that prepares students to tackle real-world challenges.

The ceremony featured an impressive lineup of distinguished guests and speakers. Senior Professor PMC Thilakarathne, Vice Chancellor of The Open University of Sri Lanka, attended as the Chief Guest. In his opening address, Prof. Thilakarathne emphasized the critical importance of strong procurement and supply chain management systems, particularly in today’s increasingly complex and interconnected global economy. He stressed the importance of sustainability, innovation, and ethical management in modern supply chains, inspiring the new students to think critically about their roles as future leaders in the field.

The keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Pratheeba Mahanamahewa, Rector of the Sripalee Campus. His enlightening presentation focused on ‘Procurement Law to Combat Corruption and Fraud,’ offering valuable insights into how legal frameworks can effectively address and prevent corruption and fraudulent practices in procurement processes. His discussion highlighted key strategies and best practices for ensuring transparency and integrity in procurement activities.

Adding further prestige to the event, the Guest of Honour, Dinesh de Silva, CEO of Bodyline Private Limited, delivered an insightful presentation on supply chain and logistics. Drawing from his extensive experience in the corporate sector, Dinesh de Silva shared valuable perspectives on industry best practices, innovative strategies, and the challenges faced in managing complex supply chains.

The Inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of an esteemed resource panel and the involvement of new learning partners. Their participation infused the event with vibrant insights and diverse perspectives, significantly enhancing its overall impact and significance. The collaboration between these distinguished guests and emerging contributors brought added depth and colour to the occasion, marking it as a noteworthy milestone in the academic community.

The Deans of all faculties, Dr. S. Sapukotanage, Head of the Department of Marketing Management, along with the Heads of other departments, Chief Coordinator Asari Tharuka Perera, and both academic and non-academic staff of the Faculty of Management studies were also present at this event. Administrative division of the university were also represented by the presence of the registrar and the bursar of the Open University of Sri Lanka.

Harsha Sirimanna, a distinguished student from the first batch, shared his insightful experiences and reflections on his MSc journey. He discussed the challenges he faced and the timely conduct of the programme.

The evening ended on a high note, with a networking session that allowed students to connect with faculty members, industry professionals, and fellow peers, fostering an environment of collaboration and mutual support.

The Faculty of Management Studies at The Open University of Sri Lanka continues to strengthen its reputation as a leader in providing relevant and forward-thinking postgraduate education. The second intake of the MSc in Public Procurement and Supply Chain Management Programme is set to pave the way for future leaders who will drive progress in the procurement and supply chain sectors, both locally and internationally.
