A new children’s ward complex at the Apeksha Cancer Hospital, Maharagama funded by the Ruhunu Mahakataragama Dewalaya, was opened on September 3. The ward complex was constructed under a concept and supervision of the chief custodian of the Dewalaya Dishan Gunasekera at a cost of Rs. 156 million raised through donations from devotees and philanthropists.
The four-storey ward complex which provides care for 75 children includes dedicated areas for play and relaxation. Three young patients at the hospital had the honour of inaugurating the building.
The Army led the construction work. Kataragama Abhinawaramaya chief incumbent Ven. Kapugama Sri Saranatissa Thera, Kataragama Kiriwehera chief incumbent Ven. Kobawaka Dhamminda Thera, Air Force project managing engineer H.D.M. Kavinda, Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs R.M. Rathnayake, surgeons; D.S. Gunasekera, Dr. P.D. Maddumarachchi, and a few residents of Kataragama participated.
