A scientific session and workshop organised by the College of Physiotherapists to mark World Physiotherapy Day which falls today will commence at the lecture hall of the National Hospital, Colombo on the same day at 9 am.

Consultant doctors and senior physiotherapists will deliver lectures and conduct practical lessons. The event will equip physiotherapists with the latest knowledge and advancements in their field. The Sri Lanka women’s cricket team’s Physiotherapist Aravinda will also participate.

Physiotherapy offers cures for diseases without complications. Doctors recommend physiotherapy for many medical conditions.

Physiotherapy is defined as the treatment using energy factors, such as light, heat, sound, electricity, magnetism, and physical exercises. Physiotherapy helps restore functions through the total rehabilitation of the patient’s physical, psychological, economic, and spiritual well-being. Physiotherapists assess the patient and plan the treatment. Physiotherapy treatment can be divided into seven categories: electrotherapy, therapeutic exercises, hydrotherapy, chest physiotherapy, manipulative procedures, positioning, and treatment with appliances.

Physiotherapy treatments or interventions are available mostly for diseases in the fields of neurology, rheumatology, paediatrics, gynaecology, geriatrics, respiratory issues, and orthopaedics.
