Frontline Socialist Party General Secretary Kumar Gunaratnam, during a press conference on Friday, lashed out at the National People’s Power (NPP) led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake, accusing the party of abandoning its strict policy against Indian expansionism and bowing down to Indian capitalists.
Gunaratnam questioned as to why Anura Kumara and Tilvin Silva have remained silent on the Provincial Councils introduced in 1987.
He said that their silence on the matter, as well as the events of 1988-89, reflects a political shift that continues to uphold the political system that has persisted for 76 years.
“They held a business summit where they presented an economic program for the wealthiest in the country. They have long since abandoned socialism and are now going to bed with capitalists,” Gunaratnam said.
“They have formed connections with the wealthy and are working to protect a system that shields those who have evaded taxes and defaulted on more than two trillion rupees in the banks. They are now protecting this system with the help of Indian working capital,” he added.
Gunaratnam said that ITAK MP Sumanthiran had said that Anura Kumara, during a visit to the North, had promised to fully implement the 13th Amendment. However, Gunaratnam said that the NPP’s election manifesto states otherwise, stating that the Provincial Councils will continue as they are.
“Anura Kumara says one thing in the North and another in the South,” he added.
