September 4, 2024 was a special day for the Sri Lanka Veteran Boxers’ Club led by former Thurstanite Dushantha Kiriella as they paid a heartfelt tribute to retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Jayakumar Thangavelu at his Wellawatte residence.
The group celebrated Thangavelu’s significant contributions to Sri Lankan boxing and was made up of former pugilists who have proudly represented the nation on both the local and international arena.
The Club has the cream of Sri Lanka’s boxing legends from yesteryears, and its members recognized and honored Thangavelu’s enduring legacy in the sport. Thangavelu’s journey in boxing is one of dedication, passion and an unyielding pursuit of excellence. His illustrious career began at S. Thomas’ College, a prestigious institution renowned for producing some of Sri Lanka’s finest athletes.
Thangavelu first encountered the sport that would define much of his life and under the guidance of skilled coaches, his natural talent flourished, setting him apart from his peers. As a student-athlete, Thangavelu demonstrated not only technical skill but also a profound understanding of the sport’s intricacies, making him a formidable opponent.
His commitment to rigorous training and his unwavering focus on improving his technique marked him as a rising star in Sri Lankan boxing. A defining moment in Thangavelu’s early career came in 1974 when he represented Sri Lanka at the Indo Ceylon Boxing Meet in India. This prestigious event provided him with an opportunity to showcase his talents on an international stage. Competing against some of the best amateur boxers in the region, Thangavelu’s performance was a testament to his skill and determination, elevating the status of Sri Lankan boxing internationally and solidifying his reputation as one of the island’s premier boxers.
After completing his schooling, Thangavelu chose to serve his country in another capacity by joining the Police and despite the demands of his new role, his passion for boxing remained undiminished. He became a key member of the Police boxing team, competing in every major tournament organized by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka.
His ability to balance the rigorous demands of his police duties with his commitment to boxing was remarkable, earning him widespread recognition and respect. His tenure with the Police boxing team was marked by numerous victories and accolades, admired by colleagues and competitors alike for his discipline and work ethic.
As his competitive boxing career drew to a close, Thangavelu transitioned into boxing administration, where his impact continued to be felt for many years. He took on the role of Treasurer of the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA), bringing his financial acumen and deep understanding of the sport’s needs to the organization. He also pursued qualifications as a referee and judge, further cementing his commitment to the sport.
His experience as a former competitor provided him with unique insights into the needs of athletes and he was widely respected for his fairness and integrity in the roles. His contributions to boxing administration ensured that the sport continued to thrive in Sri Lanka, establishing his legacy as a leader in the boxing community.
The recent visit by the Sri Lanka Veteran Boxers’ Club to DIG Thangavelu’s home was a momentous occasion, filled with gratitude and respect. Despite facing health challenges, Thangavelu welcomed the group with warmth and humility, embodying the same graciousness that had defined his career.
