President Ranil Wickremesinghe, accompanied by Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe, cast their votes at the College House polling station at the University of Colombo yesterday morning.
Speaking to the media later, President Wickremesinghe emphasised the importance of unity and peace, calling upon everyone to come together and embark on a new journey for the country. He told the gathering that he played a key role in creating the conditions necessary to hold this election following a period of instability. He said that yesterday’s election would shape the future of the Sri Lankan people.
When asked by a journalist whether this was the right time to consider a new leadership given the current situation, President Wickremesinghe highlighted his efforts over the past two years to stabilise the economy and strengthen democracy. He expressed humble pride in being able to hold an election while safeguarding the democratic rights of the people.
The President described this election as a pivotal moment for Sri Lanka, offering a valuable opportunity to move away from traditional politics and economic policies that had hindered the nation’s progress. He called it a chance to set up a new social and political system.
President Wickremesinghe thanked all voters and expressed his satisfaction with the peaceful nature of the election, and extended his gratitude to the candidates and the Election Commission for their participation and efforts.
