Nearly 85 Parliamentarians of the previous Government who entered Parliament for the first time will lose their pensions’ rights since they could not complete the five-year term as Parliament was dissolved before five years.

A Parliamentarian should serve in Parliament for five years to be entitled to a pension. The ninth Parliament was end on August 8 next year (2025). The 85 MPs belong to the former ruling party and the Opposition parties.

The Act of Pensions to Parliamentarians was passed as per the Act of 1977 No. 01. An MP is entitled to enjoy a monthly pension of one-third of the monthly salary if he or she has completed a five-year term in Parliament. An MP who completes ten years is entitled to a monthly pension of two-thirds of the monthly salary.

However, all Parliamentarians and Ministers lost all their free food, medical expenses for themselves and their families, free luxurious accommodation facilities, free official Visas and foreign trips and free vehicle benefits when the Parliament was recently dissolved by the new President. All these were in keeoing with the Parliamentary Acts and Regulations of the present Constitution,” a former senior Minister of the Kurunegala District told the Sunday Observer.
