Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said that everybody should work together for a public-oriented government service without misappropriating people’s wealth merely enjoying all the perks and privileges.

The Prime Minister said this at a meeting with officials of the Prime Minister’s Office at Flower Road, Colombo.

She said, “All of us must understand at this moment that the President was not elected in just another presidential election. In a presidential election held after a struggle against the previous government with political ineptitude, the new president was elected by the will of the majority of the people. The people expressed their decision based on the experiences gained and what they saw in the past years.

“ It is quite accurate to say that the election held this year was led by the people rather than by political parties.

She said the President addressed the nation after assuming office and stated that for the development of a country there must be good trust and rapport between the people, the ruler and the public service. People have lost that confidence. Therefore, we must work in order to restore that mutual trust and achieve that objective of all of us . Several months after an election, the people begin to think that they are alone.

So, it is our duty and responsibility to make them feel that they are listened to and well looked after.

A country cannot be built without the people’s trust and confidence in the law, public service and political authority. We have to move the country forward by working to restore that trust”.

The Prime Minister also said that one of our main objectives is to build a strong and efficient public service that avoids misusing public resources and requested everybody involved in the public service to work independently and efficiently to win the trust of the general public and create a populist public service.
