Over 4000 to contest John Tarbat senior athletics

The Sir John Tarbat Senior Athletic Championship 2024 that was postponed earlier will now be held from September 30 to October 3 at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.

This championship conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association (SLSAA) to be held from September 10 to 13 was put back due to the South Asian Junior Athletic Championship that was held in Chennai.

The meet will be sponsored by CBL Ritzbury for the 12th successive year. This is the second major all-island athletics event for the year after the All-Island Schools Relay Championship.

The SLSAA will conduct this year’s third major all-island event, the Sri John Tarbat Junior Athletic Championship in November.

The senior athletic meet will have nearly 4,500 athletes representing over 350 schools in action and conducted in three age categories in under-16, 18 and 20 for boys and girls.

The meet is scheduled to commence with the boys’ and girls’ under-20 5000m finals at 7.00 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. respectively.

A. Ratnayaka Central College, Walala secured the girls overall championship with an impressive total of 190 points last year.

Lyceum, Wattala claimed the runners-up position with 150 points while Sumana BV, Ratnapura finished third with 51 points.

Last year’s championship title for boys was won by Lyceum International School, Wattala who amassed a total of 136 points.

St. Benedict’s College finished as runners-up with 82 points and St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa secured third place with a commendable 73 points.
