John Keells Holdings ‘A’ team, who were packed with players from Kandy SC, dominated the final against Citizens Development Bank to register an easy win by 27 points to nil in the Mercantile Rugby 7s tournament that concluded at Longdon Place yesterday.
John Keels players ran circles around the defences of Citizens Development Bank team to score five tries and one conversion to give them the overwhelming victory margin.
They led 12-nil at half time with tries through Kavindu Perera and Heshan Jansen who converted his own try.
After the half time break Janindu Dilshan, Srinath Sooriyabandara and Akash Madusanka scored the tries for John Keells to add to their margin of victory.
John Keells Holdings beat Sampath Bank 29-0 and Citizens Development Bank beat Perl Beach 21-17 in the semi-finals in the Cup division.
The women’s segment final was won by Citizen Development Bank who beat Sampath Bank by 10 points to 5.
The scores at full time were deadlocked at 5-5 and extra time was called to decide the winner and CDB had the fortune of scoring the winning try during extra time. More Sands won the Shield when they beat Ceylinco by 21 points to 5 in their final.
The Bowl event was won by Brandix who beat John Keells ‘B’ by 28 points to 10 in the final.
Pearl Beach did well to score six tries for a total of 39 points to beat Sampath Bank who could reply with only 12 points in the Plate final.
Pearl Beach led 24-7 at half time. Their chief scorers were Mithun Hapugoda and Ravindra Cooray while Navin Marasinghe scored for Sampath Bank late in the game.
It was a day of interesting rugby to witness by the crowd that gathered in large numbers who will certainly take away good memories.
