Rugby followers in Sri Lanka were left in shock at the news of the passing away of former Youth captain and centre Rizvie Suhayb at the age of 54 on Friday.

Suhayb shot to fame as the captain of S. Thomas’ College that won both the League and Knock-out championships unbeaten in 1989 taking its rugby to a revolutionary level as the Thomians became a frontline force in the following two years as well.

He captained the Sri Lanka Under-20 team on their tour of Thailand in 1989 and beyond school Suhayb continued his stellar career with two of Sri Lanka’s top rugby clubs, CR & FC and Kandy Sports Club.

At Kandy SC, he became a pivotal player, helping the club secure the prestigious Clifford Cup.

Suhayb’s death after a brief illness has left a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy remains timeless. His leadership, sportsmanship and unwavering dedication to the game will forever remain etched in the history of Sri Lankan rugby.
