The one-way traffic plan implemented in the Galle Fort from June 1 was suspended by the Galle Police on Friday (4) following months of lobbying by the Fort’s residents and businesses.

The one-way plan, put in place to reduce traffic jams in the Galle Fort, was spearheaded by former Southern Province Governor Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena. However, residents and businesses said they didn’t give consent to the one-way plan and added that it hindered their daily life in the Fort including massive losses to businesses.

Residents and businesses met the Government authorities and Police on more than 20 occasions where civil representatives presented amendments to the one-way system, the sources said.

Following a meeting with the Galle Municipality Traffic Committee this week, the Galle Police said they would make changes in three days. On Friday (4) the barricades and no-entry signs were removed by the Police and traffic has reverted to what it was earlier.
